This band is absolutely brilliant. If you get a chance to see them live, do it.
I've heard them say at live performances, too, that this is the "first Cajun murder ballad". I admit I can't tell if they mean it or if it's opposite-speak. If this were Anglo old-time we might say a song is the "first old-time murder ballad" and everyone would think that was funny because pretty much every third old-time song involves somebody getting killed. We've even got old-time songs that don't have lyrics that involve people getting killed, just in the title.
However, I did Google "Cajun murder ballad" and most of the references were to this song, so . . . maybe the Cajuns had a thing against writing songs about murders?
