Oatmeal with dates

Listening: I just got notice that the new The Devil Makes Three album shipped from Amazon!

When I make oatmeal, I make a four-serving batch and press it into a square Tupperware.  Then I can cut out one serving at a time (like brownie squares) and reheat it.  The texture suffers a little, but not enough to stop it from being worth the convenience.

I don't really like sweet stuff for breakfast so this is pretty minimally sweetened.  Adjust to suit your own preferences.

3 1/2 cups water
2 cups rolled oats
1/4-1/2 cup dried dates, finely chopped (or not finely.  Whatever you like)
1-2 tablespoons brown sugar, or to taste (honey, syrup, or molasses would probably be good, too)
pinch of cinnamon
big pinch of nutmeg or mace
very small pinch of salt

Bring water to a boil.  Add oats, stir, and turn the heat down.  Add spices.  After the oatmeal has cooked for a couple of minutes and is starting to thicken, add sugar and dates.  Cook until done.

Optional: Press into a Tupperware or casserole with a lid for storage.  Cut into block servings.  To reheat, cut out a block and chop it up in a microwaveable bowl with the edge of your spoon.  Sprinkle a little water on it, cover with a paper towel, and microwave for 1 1/2 minutes, or however long it takes to heat it to your liking.
