Zeus the mule

Not a new model. Actually, quite an old model.

This is Zeus.

Flocked models were quite the thing in the wide world of model horses for awhile in the 1980's and 1990's. They're still popular but I think there's a little bit of a camp factor now; they never really did look as realistic as we tried to convince ourselves they did.

This guy started life as #830, Quarter Horse stallion, which was the "Adios" mold in fleabitten gray with black points, produced in 1990. He was customized into a draft mule by Eighmey's Wagon Shop in Iowa (I think they were in West Branch). Eighmey's sold harnesses and vehicles for Breyers, did custom flocked draft horses and mules, and hosted at least one special run original finish model, the Quarter Horse gelding in chestnut (scroll down).

Zeus lives in his old Breyer display box, to protect his fuzz from dust, so he's aged well over the past 21 years. Flockies do better the less you handle them, lest they bald and get soiled. I don't think he's really show quality now, if he ever was, but I still get him out occasionally just because I have so few customs, and no other customized long-ears.

He has a buddy named Merlin, who belongs to my brother. Merlin is black.
